During the elective modal CSI mckinnon we looked at forensics science in the field of crime investigation. This involved fingerprinting, DNA profiling and chromatography . We watched crime movies and a documentary on how to commit the perfect murder. We put our knowledge to the test and carried out pracs including chromatography. We were given a note and had to identify which pen out of five was used to write the note. We drew dots using each different pen on several strips of paper before placing them alongside the note in a beaker with a small amount of water in it. When the water was absorbed by the paper it traveled upwards and when coming in contact with the ink would create a pattern of colours. To identiy which pen was used to write the note we simply matched up the patterns. We imitated forensic scientists fingerprinting methods by using powder to dust for fingerprints on surfaces.
