9 UP is one of the two compulsory bytes modules. It is an urban project in which students work together in small groups to create a hypothesis based on a social aspect of modern Melbourne life
eg 1. - an elevator will travel faster if the building is taller.
eg 2. - football is the most popular sport in melbourne.
To determine this the groups then travel to the city to conduct different surveys, interviews and observations to tests there hypothesis. Another aspect of 9 up is teaching is students how to navigate around the city. To do this students also take part in a city scavenger hunt which encourages them to learn about the city of Melbourne.
During our time in the city my group developed a hypothesis relating to Melbourne's controversial transport system: most melbournians think that Myki is a pointless investment
We choose to base our studies around the transport system as there has been lots of hype due to the recent switch in ticketing systems. Also being public transport users ourselves, each with our own opinions on the myki/metcard we were interested in the publics views. To test our hypothesis my group decided to conduct surveys and interviews. We completed the bulk of these surveys at many different train stations, bus and tram stops. We managed to survey two hundred people and collect the data and statistics we needed.
Myki is the latest ticketing system recently introduced to public transport in Victoria, Australia. Unlike the early paper and metal strip metcard, myki is a contactless plastic smartcard. the myki system currently has these following benifits:
it calculates the "best fare" (i.e. the most economical)
fares are charged at lower rates then the current 2-hour and daily metcards
myki is reusable and can be topped up
no contact is required which allows quick touch on and touch offs.
myki are reusable which means that less paper is wasted
However since the initial metropolitan roll-out in december 2009, the myki system has been criticised on a number of grounds:
A total cost of 1.35 billion dollars
The project has taken far longer then originally planned
The government still has to pay for the existing metcard system along side myki
A large number of myki tickets have been recalled due to not working
Critics ask why a new ticketing system is needed, when melbourne already has a fully operational one

Teamwork
Team work was an important skill during 9 up. We had to work together and co-operate in order to complete the task. I believe that in order to be a good team member you need to be open minded towards others idaes and opinions. But also willing to share your own views and give others constructive cririsism. I think that I have an open mind when towards my peers and am always willing to listen and take their ideas on board. Even though my group mainly worked well together we sometimes found ourselves disagreeing with each other. Our greatest achievement was completing our 200 surveys. It was a big task and at times seemed out of reach, however we pushed through and managed to reach our goal.
Communication
Communication was also an important skill used during 9 up. Conducting surveys and interviews required us to communicate with complete strangers. This was sometimes hard and required confidence even to approach someone. Communication amongst our group was also important. We all had to listen and talk to each other. The style of communication i prefer is writing
